How to Use an F150 as a Backup Generator

The last few years brought with them lots of changes, some good and some not-so-good. 2021, Texans started the year with devastating winter storms not characteristic for the area. Millions of homes lost power and heat for long stretches of time. Pipes burst, people burnt precious belongings for warmth, and families huddled together in the darkness.

However, an unexpected hero came forward for some; their own Ford F-150. Texans found that they could electrify their homes with the truck's onboard generators which can provide a maximum of 85-hours of uninterrupted power. The snow of the severe winter storm has long since melted away, but the lessons the country learned from Texas shouldn't. Here's what to know about using your F-150 to generate power.

What to Know About the F-150 Power Onboard System

The 2022 F-150 Lightning can power your home for 3-10 days. Expect roughly 7 days but a 10-day period can be achieved if you use electricity conservatively during emergencies. You can even hook up your Ford directly to your property's electrical box when you purchase an accompanying Home Integration System from Sunrun (which includes an inverter, a transfer switch, and a small battery).

If plugged into the Home Integration System using Sunrun, your F-150's bidirectional charging capability enables it to start powering your home if the power goes out. What does this mean? You don't have to worry about a complicated process for using your F-150 as a generator, or even be physically present! That means that, if the power goes out while you're away, you won't have to worry about pipes freezing and bursting.

You can add a power onboard system to your current truck. You read that right; you don't need to purchase an entirely new truck to reap this benefit of a 2.0-kW system, as long as your current F-150 has a 2.7-liter V-6, 3.5-liter V-6 or 5.0-liter V-8 engine. These are found on a number of older models.

We recommend that an experienced technician add the Power Onboard capabilities (this is no job for an amateur). Click here to schedule an appointment with our team or learn more about our Service Center in Ellisville, MO.

You can choose from multiple options. Your choice in the system is dependent upon your engine. For example, the 2.0-kW option is compatible with most gas engines and provides an impressive 2,000 watts (hence, its name). Comparatively, most vehicles offer only 150 watts. 2,000 is more than enough to run a power washer, loudspeakers, or miter saw. Alternatively, the 2.4 kW and 7.2 kW systems only work with hybrid trucks. The majority of drivers' needs will be more than satisfied with the 2.0kW and 2.4kW versions, but the 7.2kW is perfect for those who anticipate major projects.

You can control it with the FordPass app. You don't have to physically be present to turn the power generator on and off. You simply need to be within 30-feet.

You can charge items while the F-150 is in motion or idle. You can select the setting which allows the generator to bypass the truck's instinct to shut down if left locked and idle for an extended period of time. This lets you safely charge belongings no matter what you're doing or location.

You can access the power onboard system using the truck bed. Most cars' power outlets are located in the front console because they're intended for small items (like your phone). But the F-150 outlet located in the bed lets you power appliances of all sizes, whether you position in the back of the truck or use extension cords. Plus, the exterior location means you can lock up your truck while you charge your belongings.

Powering your home with your truck is simpler with additional Sunrun equipment, though it's not always required. Pairing your F-150 with a Ford Charge Station Pro and the Home Integration System is highly recommended for swift and easy power generation. That said, some drivers have found alternative solutions, such as using an extension cord to connect the truck to specific home appliances. In these cases, the truck must remain running to supply power.

The F-150 Lightning isn't the only EV that can generate power for your home. The sleek and powerful Ford Mustang Mach-E can also be plugged into the Home Integration System (or connected directly to devices) to electrify devices.
