Can You Safely Convert a 2WD F150 to 4WD?

Good news! You can convert your 2WD F150 to a 4WD.
However, it's not a quick fix you can complete in your own garage.

You'll have to switch out the output shaft, transmission, wiring, shifter, and a long list of other truck parts. So, just because you can doesn't necessarily mean you should. The extent of the work heavily relies upon the year of your F150; some older trucks' simplicity makes them easier to convert, while others will require extra metalwork. An experienced mechanic should be able to tell you specifically which parts would need replacement and the associated costs of the conversion kit. You mustn't turn this project over to just anyone claiming to be "good with cars." Converting a truck from 2WD to 4WD is an unusual project, so ideally you'd go with someone a seasoned pro who has done similar work. Additionally, it's important to weigh the cost of converting your 2WD against buying a new purchase. If your sole goal is to save money, switching out your existing gear won't automatically be your cheaper choice.

Why Would You Want to Convert Your F150 to 4WD?

There's a lot to like about 2WD makeups. They are lighter and energy-efficient, as well as generally less expensive. But their limitations are undeniable. Compared to the 4WD counterparts, they provide less power and off-roading capabilities. These constraints are particularly impractical for F150. After all, people love their pickups for their ability to steer through winter weather and haul sizable belongings.

Is Converting Your Truck Worth It?

Just because you can convert your truck doesn't mean you should. It's a costly endeavor that, when compared to the price of purchasing a 4WD from the lot, doesn't always make sense on paper. Another thing to keep in mind; your title will state that your car is a 2WD. This won't create any regulatory problems. However, if you choose to one day sell it or trade it in, you'll likely receive a lesser payment based on the title. There are circumstances in which converting your f150 from 2WD to 4WD isn't necessarily a bad idea.

As mentioned above, upgrading some older trucks would require fewer parts and labor. If you have a "donor" vehicle from the same year, you can strip parts to greatly reduce spending. When determining whether or not it's "worth it" to convert your truck, consider why you would want to take on such a costly undertaking. If it's because you like your current 2WD truck, why not test drive some 4WD trucks to see if they deliver similar handling and features? However, if it's because you truly love your current truck, no price savings may match the sentimental value.
